Lavish on the Layers…the Key to Luxurious Decorating

I was recently asked to do a guest blog post for Jenn, a new blogger over at BloomingParis.                                                                                       Jenn asked me to write something about “Creating Lavishly” in our homes. I immediately thought of “Layers”.
One of the easiest ways to create a lavish look in your home is by adding layers. For some people, two or three layers will be sufficient in creating a level of lavishness they feel comfortable with, for others, it will take five or six or more layers to reach the level of lavishness they feel comfortable with! The point is not how many layers you feel comfortable with but rather that the layering process is what adds that lavish feel to your décor. No matter what your personal style is or how many layers you feel comfortable with, YOU can create a lavish look in your home…easily and affordably!

Let’s take a table setting for example….

Here you see several layers that create this beautiful and lavish table setting.

Layer 1-the damask tablecloth (purchased for around $12 at a discount store)

Layer 2 -the leaf placemats (which can be easily made with some felt, silk leaves and a glue gun) the mis-matched silver flatware picked up at flea markets, and the napkin also fall into this layer as does the goblet. The “table confetti” which is colored glass stones from a craft store also adds to this layer.

Layer 3 -large dinner plate, the napkin ring and the centerpiece

Layer 4 –smaller patterned plate (purchased at a discount store)

Layer 5 –clear glass salad bowl (purchased as part of an entire set of dishes at a flea market)

Layer 6-placecard

So…as you see, this beautiful and lavish table has six layers to create that lavish look!

Here’s another example…a coffee table vignette…

There are not quite as many layers here but the effect is still the same. I’ve used vintage silver, an ornate mirror, a candlestick with crystal drops and roses which all add another dimension of lavishness as these elements are associated with a lavish look. All of these elements can be purchased in a variety of places suiting all budgets.

Layer 1-crocheted table square

Layer 2-mirror

Layer 3-silk sparkly leaves, beaded pear and white pumpkin

Layer 4-vase, silver footed compote, candlestick

Layer 5-roses in the vase, ornaments, leaves and dried hydrangea in compote

You see…it is easy to create a lavish look when you add layer after layer!

I enjoy looking  through magazines such as Victoria, Southern Lady, Romantic Country and Romantic Homes to find beautiful, inspirational ideas for layering…from tables to beds to sofas… layering adds that luxurious, lavish look to any room on any budget!

Holiday Tips:
*Now is the time to make your list of all the ingredients you need for your Thanksgiving dinner and pick up as much as you can this weekend, making note of the fresh items you’ll need to pick up next Tuesday or Wednesday.

*Work out your tablesetting and serving pieces as well as whether you are serving family style or buffet style.

*Set out all the elements for your table and buffet to make sure nothing is missing and plan on setting your table Tuesday night.

*Check in with those bringing dishes to be certain they haven’t forgotten!

*Get your music ready to go….our tradition is to begin playing the Christmas music right after dinner!

*Check your list of details to make sure nothing is overlooked and assign a day and time for each of them.

***Take a bubblebath!
