Where is YOUR Newport?

How does looking at this picture make you feel?

It makes me feel like I want to be right there! NOW!  This is a shot of the Newport Harbor in Newport RI, one of my favorite places to be! Newport holds many fond memories for me!  Forty-seven years ago, my prince and I spent our first summer there… and I fell in love… with him and with Newport! We’ve been going back ever since! Our 3 children have fallen in love with it as well… we’ve given them memories in Newport RI as a legacy! We also began the memory-making in Newport with the next generation, our 2 oldest grandsons, 10 and 5. It was so much fun seeing Newport through the eyes of children once again! Children see everything so differently, don’t they?

Our adventures included lots of firsts for them… The 1st 8-hour (each way) car trip – they did GREAT, 1st time at the ocean, 1st time on a boat, 1st time away from home for 6 nights, 1st time for Wacky Waffles and Lobster Rolls, and many more 1sts! We had a great time and the Lovebugs can’t wait to go back!

We also got to visit with our oldest daughter and son-in-love, who just a few weeks ago moved from PA to Newport!!! (I admit, I’m a wee bit envious!) They are writing new chapters in their life together and these next chapters will be written from magical Newport. Bonus: they took the 2 Lovebugs on an adventure so my Prince & I could have a few hours to ourselves! We visited one of my favorite mansions, The Breakers, it was so nice to imagine life in the Gilded Age, the architecture, gardens, and ocean views are AMAZING! The perfect place to refresh your DREAMS! Which I did!

People ask me all the time, “What is so special about Newport RI?”
What is so special about ANY of the places we hold dear to our hearts?

Many times, it’s the memories that have been created in a particular place that keeps it close to our hearts. That is certainly true for me with Newport RI! There are soooo many years of beautiful memories. In addition, there is the magnificence and awe of the ocean that surrounds Newport RI, and the romance of an era gone by…”The Gilded Age”. Summer “cottages” were built by the very wealthy in a day when extravagance was preferred and flaunted! The beauty and detail that went into those mansions, not to mention the extravagant furnishings. Being an interior decorator, you can imagine what that does for my love of design when I take in the jaw-dropping splendor of the historical mansions along Bellevue and Ocean Drive, places like Rosecliff, The Breakers, Marble House, Astor’s Beechwood, and The Elms! They are MAGNIFICENT, SPLENDIFEROUS, AMAZING!!! The perfect backdrops for daydreaming back in time!

This is the amazing ceiling in the reception area at The Breakers!!!

When I’m there, I feel as though I have stepped back in time to a different place! A place of beauty, formality, rituals, and civility. A place where you are “dressed” for dinner and for breakfast. A place where entertaining was a regular affair and deliciously extravagant! A place where women were ladies and men were gentlemen. I could go on and on… Oh, I know it wasn’t all perfect… but I can’t seem to help but think they could teach us a few things about beauty and social graces. About living life and enjoying the arts and the pleasure of the company of friends. Of entertaining ourselves without computers and TVs and cell phones and iPods, video games, and social media. Enjoying instead a concerto, lawn tennis, croquet, walks on the beach, afternoon tea, conversation, dancing…  all in a very civilized way, I might add. They surrounded themselves with the beauty that added to the enjoyment of their everyday lives. It seems, sometimes, we’ve forgotten how to do that. And, just for the record, those qualities of life have very little to do with one’s income and very much to do with one’s mindset! They lived and entertained in ways we rarely see now.

I think everyone needs a place like “my” Newport….a place you just love to be, a place that holds wonderful memories, a place you love to just think about, daydream about!

Where is your “Newport”? Where is it that you love to go back to year after year? Where is it that holds special memories for you?  When will you visit your “Newport” again? Get it on your list of “must do this summer”! If it’s not possible to visit for some reason….what can you do instead? Where can you go that will give you a sense of whatever it is that drew you to the place you’re thinking of right now?

So……get that calendar out and plan that time to visit your “Newport”!

Make this YOUR year to SPARKLE & SHINE!  I BELIEVE in YOU!

Pinchot State Park is mine. I never get tired of going on the trail, camping there, swimming, looking at the stars. ANd I have a little dream goal of hiking the whole way around the lake at the end of this year.
