One of My Most Favorites

One of my MOST FAVORITE things to do in the summer is to eat outside on our deck. It is very private back there, surrounded by trees and backing up to a field with no houses behind us. Each year we place multiple planters of bright cheery geraniums, petunias and verbena all around on the deck, so there are plenty of colorful blooms to enjoy. Because of the trees, birds serenade us whenever we are out there, adding to the peaceful beauty! A big bonus is that our deck is about 5 feet up off the ground so we don’t usually have many bugs bothering us! I especially like that part! All of these elements come together to help create a very inviting al fresco atmosphere!

The Joy of the Lord is My Strength!g

We eat out there as often as we can, weather permitting (translated: not too hot, not too cold, not too humid, etc.) On the weekends we love to enjoy a lazy breakfast on the deck before the sun covers the whole thing. In the evening, we love to enjoy a late dinner out there, after the sun has gone down behind the trees!

You know how I love to set a pretty table…..however, I really like to keep it simple for our deck dining. I have a drawer that I keep some pretty vintage tablecloths in and another drawer with some candles we use outside. I can quickly grab these “outdoor” table items and have the table set in no time!

It’s so easy to create a lovely table and atmosphere for dining “Al Fresco” with just a few simple steps!

7 Tips for Dining Al Fresco…Beautifully

1) Cover your table with a pretty cloth or piece of fabric…think bright splashy colors, nautical or soothing pastels, vintage linens
2) Incorporate some summer elements….seashells, summer blooms, dragonfly or butterfly themed items or nautical pieces
3) Include candles…they help to keep the bugs at bay
4) Invest in some “summery” dishes and cloth napkins that are specifically for your summertime “Al Fresco” meals

5) Have a CD player nearby so you can pop in a suitable CD….my faves, Harry Connick, Jr. if it’s a romantic dinner for two or maybe The Beach Boys for a fun lighthearted summertime gathering with a few friends
6) Think about the surrounding area…set out potted flowers or plants, string up some little lights to sparkle the night away, use cushions on your chairs so they are comfy enough to sit and chat awhile
7) KISS…Keep It Simple Sweetie….don’t complicate your life, keep summertime “Al Fresco” dining simple and keep supplies easily accessible, then you will do it more often!

Enjoy the day to day moment & memories you create…… for those are what life is made up of!

In Need of HOPE!

If ever there was a time to be extremely vigilant about what we allow into our minds and what we speak out of our mouths, it is NOW!

Daily there are reports of violence, war, financial crisis…..on and on the negative list grows!

How do you keep from losing HOPE in these days of turbulence?

Here are 3 things I do to keep HOPE alive in my own life, mind & spirit. I pray you will be encouraged to do the same……these things REALLY WORK! I know because I see the results in my own life and the lives of others doing the same things!

One key thing to remember, though, YOU MUST BE INTENTIONAL, DILIGENT & VIGILENT!

3 Things You Can Do to Keep HOPE Alive in Your Life

  1. SHUT OFF the news and any other negative, fear filled noise! That includes TV, radio, social media, people…any source that is flowing with doom and gloom.
  2. TURN ON positive, uplifting, hope filled noise! Very carefully select what you allow into your mind. Intentionally CHOOSE to surround yourself with positive, uplifting, encouraging people, CDs, DVDs, radio, TV….whatever will fill you up with good stuff!
  3. MEDITATE on the TRUTH! God’s Word says in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you HOPE and a future.” The very 1st place I go to for HOPE, PEACE & COMFORT is to God and His Word! Knowing God loves me, cares for me, hears and answers my prayers is what keeps HOPE alive in my mind, my spirit, my life!

One of my favorite passages of scripture, that I try to live by, is Philippians 4:6-8. This passage has guided me and brought me peace and comfort for over 35 years! On numerous occasions where fear and despair was closing in on me, I turned to this scripture and found strength and peace, comfort and HOPE!
I HOPE you will read it and find the same strength, peace, comfort and HOPE that I have/do!

HAZY    HOT    and   HUMID!

Truth be told, the 3 H’s make me feel like a wrung out dishrag! Ever since I can remember I’ve had a very low heat tolerance in the summer! Which is probably why I’ve become an expert at staying COOL when it’s HOT outside! And…why I don’t particularly enjoy tropical climates!

Earlier this week, I wrote an article for Hope for Women magazine (online version) featuring 15 of my favorite Ways to Stay Cool as a Cucumber When Summer Heats Up!

Numbers 5, 8 & 14 are my favorites! I’d love to hear which ones you like best or maybe which ones you wish you’d thought of!

One more thing before you run off to enjoy this Patriotic summer holiday weekend……. A bit of history for you from the 4th of July 1787.

Here is a link to a prayer in response to Benjamin Franklin’s call to “seek God” in 1787. Recently, I have found it quite enlightening to read more about the faith of our Founding Fathers and their vision for the United States of America!        JULY 4th PRAYER 1787

Newport is a place I look forward to visiting every single year! When will you visit your “Newport” again? Get it on your list of “must do this summer”! If it’s not possible to visit for some reason….what can you do instead? Where can you go that will give you a sense of whatever it is that drew you to the place you’re thinking of right now?

Life is fleeting……it is SO IMPORTANT to make and take time out to refresh, refuel, rejuvenate and DREAM!

So……get that calendar out and plan that time to visit your “Newport”!
